Keffrelyn Brown Joins Leadership Austin Essential Class of 2018

Congratulations to Town Lake Chapter member Keffrelyn Brown and the other members of the Leadership Austin Class of 2018. The distinguished group of community leaders represents diverse spheres of interest and influence. Through participation in the flagship program of Leadership Austin, they will meet monthly around the city to explore regional issues, hone leadership skills, forge new relationships and improve our community. Dr. Brown is a UT professor and leading scholar of the intersections of teaching, curriculum and race. Town Lake (TX) Chapter Wins Western Area Recognition

The Town Lake (TX) Chapter was honored at The Links, Incorporated’s Western Area Conference in Denver, Colorado for its new website design, STEM educational initiative and I Know I Can Program.   The Town Lake (TX) Chapter earned the Best of Web Award for the new chapter website.  The Technology Committee migrated to a new web application platform and revamped the website design based on feedback from the chapter. Town Lake (TX) Chapter Launches Award-winning NSBE Jr. Team

The Town Lake (TX) Chapter’s newly launched National Society of Black Engineers Jr. Chapter placed third of 38 teams in its very first competition, the Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA) Robotics Arena Contest held in Seguin, Texas in January. With no assistance from adults, Team Master Builders used LEGO EV3 motors and sensors to build a robot that performed multiple tasks on the challenge field. The team, which includes 5th through 8th graders,  prepared diligently after school and on Saturdays at HBCU Huston-Tillotson University with the help of Town Lake (TX) Chapter members and community volunteers. Private Screening STEM Fundraiser: Hidden Figures

Please join the Town Lake Chapter of The Links, Incorporated on January 5, 2017, for a private screening and fundraising event featuring the long-awaited movie, Hidden Figures, the amazing untold story of Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe). These brilliant African-American women worked at NASA, serving as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, advanced the United States’ leadership position in the Space Race, and galvanized the world. Town Lake (TX) Chapter Wins National Recognition

The Town Lake (TX) Chapter was honored at The Links, Incorporated’s national assembly in Las Vegas, Nevada, for its stellar STEM initiative at Norman Elementary School.  The chapter’s effort placed in the top three of 286 Links chapters in the services to youth category.   The chapter offered computer skills lessons at Norman Elementary School three times a month during the academic year in order to bolster 5th grader’s competence and confidence when working with technology.  Sessions presented opportunities for students to use Microsoft PowerPoint and Word, learn computer science through basic coding, and nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. Austin African American Book Festival Author Reception

The Town Lake (TX) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated will host an author reception for the 10th Annual Austin African American Book Festival on Friday, June 24, 2016, at 7:00 p.m. at the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center. The event will feature book signings and remarks by featured authors Sharon G. Flake, ReShonda Tate Billingsley and Town Lake (TX) Chapter member Gerry Tucker.
